HOUSE CONCURRENT RESOLUTION NO. 16

Directing the Secretary of Transportation to name the bridge to be constructed across the Greenbrier River in Ronceverte, West Virginia, on U.S. Route 219, the "Marshall Casdorph Memorial Bridge."

Whereas, Marshall Casdorph was born on September 4, 1907, in Greenbrier County, where he became employed as a clerk in the CJ Stores at ten years of age and subsequently purchased the CJ Stores and expanded its operations to twenty stores in three West Virginia counties; and

Whereas, Marshall Casdorph married Pauline Yates Casdorph and remained married to her for sixty-three years; and
Whereas, Marshall Casdorph served the United States Army with distinction and honor as an infantryman in World War II from 1942-1945 in the European Theater of Operations as a member of the 394th Infantry Regiment, 99th Infantry Division, and received a battlefield commission; and
Whereas, Marshall Casdorph was an active community and civic leader in Ronceverte, Greenbrier County and contiguous counties throughout his adult life who founded the Community Christmas Tree Commemorative Program which has prospered and grown since its origination more than fifty years ago; served as president, Ronceverte Chamber of Commerce; bank director of the First National Bank; was instrumental in the development of the Shenandoah Nursing Home; served on the board of directors of the Humana Hospital; was actively involved in programs of the Boy Scouts of America; as an active Rotarian received its highest honor--The Paul Harris Fellow Award; served as the Potentate, Beni Kedem Temple and as chairman for twenty years of its Shriners Crippled Children program; served as Grand Commander of the Grand Commandery of West Virginia; and who was actively involved in community and economic development in the Ronceverte and Greenbrier County areas; and
Whereas, Sadly, Marshall Casdorph died on December 20, 1992, and is survived by his widow; and
Whereas, The passing of Marshall Casdorph should not be unnoticed and appropriately honored; and
Whereas, The State of West Virginia will construct a bridge crossing the Greenbrier River from U.S. Route 219 in Ronceverte which the Legislature of West Virginia desires to be designated as the "Marshall Casdorph Memorial Bridge" in honor and tribute to his outstanding achievements which have benefited all West Virginians; therefore, be it
Resolved by the Legislature of West Virginia:
That the Legislature of West Virginia hereby directs the secretary of transportation to name the bridge to be constructed across the Greenbrier River from U.S. Route 219 near Ronceverte, West Virginia, as the "Marshall Casdorph Memorial Bridge"; and, be it
Further Resolved, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates is hereby directed to forward a copy of this resolution to His Excellency, Honorable Gaston Caperton, Governor of the State of West Virginia, and to the Honorable Charles L. Miller, Secretary, Department of Transportation, State of West Virginia.
